Alycia Outlaw presented the program on New Year's Resolutions by passing away the "Old Man" (revenge, gossip, dirty language, lies, etc.) and putting on the "New Man" (patience, self control, peace, forgiveness, kindness, long suffering, thankfulness, love and serving). Thank you to Alycia for presenting many thoughtful, inspiring and entertaining programs this past year!

Workers are still needed for Upward Basketball concessions, greeters and prayer partners! Contact Sherry Wright or Jan Vinyard -- or just come and offer your service. This program is reaching so many for Christ that could never be reached in any other way. We need HBC members to show your support and help. We're all busy, but you never know what just a couple of hours of your time can accomplish!

Our next mission project will be to furnish hot dog lunches to our shut-ins on Jan. 28 (our last day of Upward at HBC). Susan Bailey will be chairing this project -- so contact Susan to help deliver!

2011 Scattering Seeds Christmas Party

The annual Scattering Seeds Christmas Party at the home of Nina Brannon and co-hosted by Deborah Craig was uplifting, fun and entertaining! Barbara Hughes won for the "tackiest Christmas sweater," with Peggy Miller running a close second. Head Elf, president Alycia Outlaw, led our "ornament swap" with a new game that involved passing the gifts left and right -- and everyone went home with an ornament! We had several visitors, new members -- and we were glad to have Lela Moseley back in our group! Enjoy the photos . . .

Keeping Christ in Christmas

The number one way to keep Jesus Christ in your Christmas celebrations is to have him present in your daily life. Keeping Christ in Christmas is more about the way you live your life than the things you say—such as "Merry Christmas" versus "Happy Holidays."

Keeping Christ in Christmas means daily revealing the character, love and spirit of Christ that dwells in you, by allowing these traits to shine through your actions. Here are simple ways to keep Christ the central focus of your life this Christmas season.

Give God one very special gift just from you to him: Let this gift be something personal that no one else needs to know about, and let it be a sacrifice. David said in 2 Samuel 24 that he would not offer a sacrifice to God that cost him nothing.
Set aside a special time to read the Christmas story in Luke 1:5-56 through 2:1-20. Consider reading this account with your family and discussing it together.
Set up a Nativity scene in your home.
Plan a project of good will this Christmas: Find someone with a genuine need, involve your whole family and see how happy you can make someone this Christmas.
Take a group Christmas caroling in a nursing home or a children's hospital.
Give a surprise gift of service to each member of your family: Jesus taught us to serve by washing the disciples feet. He also taught us that it is "more blessed to give than to receive." Acts 20:35 (NIV) The idea of giving an unexpected gift of service to members of your family is to demonstrate Christ-like love and service.
Set aside a time of family devotions on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning: Before opening the gifts, read a few Bible verses and discuss as a family the true meaning of Christmas.
Attend a Christmas church service together with your family: If you are alone this Christmas or don't have family living near you, invite a friend or a neighbor to join you.
Send Christmas cards that convey a spiritual message: This is an easy way to share your faith at Christmastime. If you've already bought the reindeer cards—no problem! Just write a Bible verse and include a personal message with each card.
Write a Christmas letter to a missionary: Many missionaries are unable to travel home for the holidays, so it can be a very lonely time for them. Write a special Christmas letter to a missionary of your choice, thanking them for giving their life in service to the Lord.

Thanksgiving Prayer

Even though I clutch my blanket and growl when the alarm rings each morning, thank you, Lord, that I can hear. There are many who are deaf.

Even though I keep my eyes tightly closed against the morning light as long as possible, thank you Lord, that I can see. There are many who are blind.

Even though I huddle in my bed and put off the effort of rising, thank you, Lord that I have the strength to rise. There are many who are bedridden.

Even though the first hour of my day is hectic, when socks are lost, toast is burned, and tempers are short, thank you, Lord, for my family. There are many who are lonely.

Even though our breakfast table never looks like the pictures in magazines and the menu is at times unbalanced, thank you, Lord for the food we have. There're many who have no job.

Even though I grumble and bemoan my fate from day to day and wish my circumstances were not so modest, thank you, Lord, for the gift of life.

Report from Kat
There is truly no greater joy in this life than to serve God faithfully and without hesitation. I am humbled to have been allowed to serve here in Haiti for both the medical teams this past two weeks.

The final hours draw near and we have completed the last clinic at the village called Tapio. My boots are dusty, my feet ache. My head throbs from working in the heat and the hours upon hours of constant noise. If you have worked with us in the past you know what I am talking about--the babies crying, people talking as they are waiting to be seen, the noise of the clinic. Yet there is a joy in my heart that is indescribable. I realize where we have been and how God has been glorified because we were simply willing. There really is no greater joy than knowing you served God with all your being--with all your heart, body and mind.

It always seems to hit me at some point towards the end of the trip. I try to hold the tears back until I get on the plane, but seldom do I succeed at that.
This afternoon when we returned home, I went to Chuck to turn in the census of the number of patients seen this week and the lump in my throat made it difficult to say aloud, so I just handed him the paper. Suddenly, we both realized it was almost 2,000 people in the last two weeks -- 2,000 people who had no medical care, not even Tylenol for a headache. More than that, we were vessels as the Holy Spirit worked through us to bring love and compassion in His name. There can't be anything more glorious and humbling at the same time than to know God and serve Him in this way. His promises are true. He is the Great Healer and Provider.

There is still more work to do. The tedious task of the medical inventory, a few more meals, packing, cleaning, and the final farewells. Yet, with joy and eagerness I carry on my tasks ahead, claiming this wonderful promise: "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:2

Today we were working at Jerusalem IV. It was very hot and muggy, but the joy of the children spurred me on to work as hard as I could. The lesson we taught the children today was on the parable of the Pearl of Great Price. We taught the children that Jesus is worth all that you have.

He is worth all of your heart, all of your soul, all of your mind and all of your strength. The children really had no clue what a pearl is, but we explained that it is a very valuable piece of jewelry. It is valuable like gold, but the Kingdom of Heaven is worth more than any amount of gold. Haiti has blessed me so much. I thank God for sending me here. Keep us in your prayers.

The Lord has blessed me to come on my first mission trip after completing nursing school at the University of South Alabama. While on this trip, we were able to provide care to the Haitian people, including wound care, medications, vitamins, clothes, and shoes. We were able to bring over seven suitcases of clothes and hygiene products, as well as six boxes of shoes. Praise the Lord! We prayed over the sick and provided funds for those needing assistance getting to the clinic or hospital for additional medical attention.

Today, we traveled to Jerusalem IV, where we provided medical and wound care to over 200 patients! I praise the Lord above for allowing us to safely travel to Haiti and make medical care available for the people in this remote area. (The nearest hospital is approximately 2 hours away.) May God bless all the supporters for this beloved missionary trip.

November 16

This morning we had our meeting with the Jerusalem II church. I wish I had good news, but we could not find a solution to their problem, so we go back to the Lord in fasting and praying. It's God's church, and I'm sure he can take care of it. Please continue to pray for unity.

While Pastor Lewis and I were in the meeting, which lasted from 9:00-11:45 a.m., I had our team go to a church in a new area called Palto, which is about 30 minutes away. This church has never had a medical clinic or VBS. The pastor and all the people were so happy to see us--as you will see by the photos the little church was full of people seeing the doctors all day. After spending all morning listening to people of a church that will not even try to solve its problems, this was a refreshing change--it reminds me why I come here.

While the clinic was going on, some of the men went up into the mountains with an interpreter and talked to many Haitians, handing out tracks in Kreol. I encourage this, because this is how we find new areas that we can come back and talk to Pastor Do about--he knows everyone in this area.

After dinner George took a load of people from Jerusalem Baptist Church to Jerusalem IV to continue the revival. He came back and got most of the Americans, and I took the rest in the Ford. We had a great time. The people were rejoicing to the Lord with singing and dancing, from young to old. Our group got up and sang, and Pastor Lewis preached a revival message that I will never forget. He just said it like it is in scripture.

Haiti Mission Trip

Update 4 -- November 15

I got up early this morning to take Will to the airport and pick up Chris, Lee, Bryan and Paul. Chris came up with us last week, and the others came into Port au Prince the next day. They came to help us with the vision of the clinic. They told us the first thing we need to do is get a survey of the property to see exactly the area we are dealing with. I'm sure this will take some time, but it's a starting point.
By the time I got back, the team had already started the medical clinic and VBS in Jerusalem Baptist Church. Everything was running smoothly. This is such a good team; so many of them are seasoned missionaries. Around 12:00 some of the team had lunch, but there are several of us who are fasting and praying for the meeting tomorrow with the Jerusalem II church. We are meeting with Pastor Do, Pastor Fanis (oldest son of Pastor Fani, who died), Madame Fani (wife of Pastor Fani) and the committee. I have invited Pastor Lewis, who has 43 years as a pastor, to sit in with us. It says in Proverbs that a wise man has many counselors, and I couldn't think of anyone more qualified to help than Pastor Lewis.
After lunch I took the guys to Jerusalem IV to show them the church, and then we met the team at Daniel's village. Again everything ran smoothly. There were people already lined up when we arrived, and the kids were ready for VBS. I truly believe one day we will be building a church there. You cannot plant a seed and continue to water it and it not grow. We planted a seed in 2006, and have been watering it ever since. In God's timing there will be an increase, all to His glory.
The work team has almost completed another bathroom; that will make 4 completed bathrooms before we leave. I stand in awe of what the Lord has done here, and I know this is just the beginning. It will be far more than I could ever imagine or ask for, as He said in scripture.

Pumpkin Bread

This is the recipe for the Pumpkin Bread made by Judy Childs at the October meeting:

Pumpkin Bread

3-1/2 cups sifted plain flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

1-1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon nutmeg

3 cups sugar

4 eggs

1-1/2 to 2 cups pumpkin

1 cup oil

2/3 cup water

Mix all ingredients together. Pour into two loaf pans. Cook at 325 degrees for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes.

Haiti Mission Trip Day 3

Prayer for Missionaries:

"Father, thank You that You do not slumber as You watch over our mission team. Please grant them good health and protect them from physical danger. Shield them with Your armor so that they can stand firm against evil. Remind them that You have not given them a spirit of far, but of power, love and self-discipline." (Psalm 121; Eph. 6:13; 2 Tim. 1:7)

Report from Meagan Messick, Medical Clinic -- We started out today with a quick bite to eat before we headed over to the church to begin our medical clinic. We quickly noticed not only the physical need of these people, but the spiritual need, as well. One of our first patients was a five-month-old baby girl who had obvious malnutrition. After examining her, we discovered that she had a serious heart condition, as well as a gastrointestinal disorder that caused her to reflux most of what she ate. Of all the patients,
this patient stood out to me the most because of the simple fact that even in a condition as severe as hers, God has the complete power to heal this child from an ailment we look at with sad eyes. At one point, I turned to my friend and said, "Doesn't it just excite you that we serve an almighty God who can completely take away these ailments, and yet He knows us by name?!?" Throughout the day we continued administering medications and guidance to those who needed it, and kept a mindset of "hiding behind the cross" and letting God be the one who receives ALL the glory. After all, we are only here and working because of Him! We finished up the clinic a few hours after lunch and packed up our supplies in preparation for what God will have us do tomorrow!
Report from Chris Kroll, VBS -- What a blessing to serve the children of Z'Orange village. These children are precious in the Eyes of the Lord! They were very excited to listen and learn; they were well-behaved and gracious. We spent approximately 30 minutes with each group of children.
During this time, we sang (they love songs with motions), shared the story of Jesus leaving the 99 to find the lost sheep, and we made a craft that shared God's plan of salvation. What a wonderful gift to be able to serve the Lord in this capacity. Each child was unique, but nearly every one of them had a certain joy. God is working in the lives of the children of this village. They have been taught about the Christ. They know that each one of us has sin in our lives that must be dealt with. They know that Jesus' death and resurrection gives us victory over our sin. Many of them are babies in Christ; others have not yet come to personally know the Savior. The Spirit of God is dealing with many of these young hearts; all of them have had the seed of the Gospel planted within their lives. Please join us in praying for the children of Z'Orange and the continuing ministry of Jerusalem Baptist Church in this community. Pray that God will expand the hearts of the believers for all of the children and families in the surrounding area. God has done an amazing work in this village, but there is so much more to be done!
Report from Bro. Chuck -- The Lord has sent another amazing team to do His work. It so cool to watch how the Lord takes His people--who don't know each other, but who have the greatest bond of all (our Lord)--and transforms them into a dynamic body working together in harmony.

Raspberry Cheese Spread

This is the recipe for the great spread Jonnie Ruth had at Scattering Seeds' Nov. meeting. (Thanks for sharing, Jonnie!)

INGREDIENTS

4 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup mayonnaise
2 cups (8 ounces) shredded mozzarella cheese
2 cups (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese
3 green onions, finely chopped
1 cup chopped pecans (toasted)
Dash of red pepper
1/4 cup seedless raspberry preserves
Assorted crackers

INSTRUCTIONS
- 1. In a small mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and mayonnaise until blended. Beat in cheeses and onions. Stir in pecans and red pepper. Spread into a plastic wrap-lined 9-in. round dish. Refrigerate until set, about 1 hour.
  2. Invert onto a serving plate; spread with preserves. Serve with crackers.

HBC Mission Team goes to Haiti

November 13

A new day and a new team--I believe all of the team slept very well last night. Most of them had very early mornings, so that bed with a mattress looked mig
hty good.
This morning we all got up and had our coffee a
nd sang some worship songs, with Ryan playing the guitar that the Wisconsin team left (thank you!). After a few praise songs, we had our typical breakfast of oatmeal, cereal, and pop tarts.
After breakfast we were blessed by Pastor Lewis, who led our morning devotion. Pastor Lewis is definitely an anointed man of God. His wisdom and maturity in the Lord are inspiring. When our devotion was over, we went to Jerusalem Baptist Church, where Pastor Chris gave the message. Will and I had to leave to take Chris Burch back to the airport to meet some men who were flying in. When we returned the team had already eaten lunch, and most of them were taking Jesus' word literally about resting on Sunday, if you know what I mean.
Everyone woke up from their resting in the Lord about 3 p.m., and we had team meetings to plan for tomorrow. Around 5 p.m. Will, Paul and I drove to Jerusalem IV to pick up people from their church for the revival. The first load in Gabriel was around 90 people, and the second load was about 80--it was hard to count with that many people scrambling to get in the truck.
I need to ask for your prayers for the Jerusalem II church. I guess I spoke too soon early this week when I thought all the turmoil with the church was over. Some may remember that their pastor died, and he had been married before, so there has been a division in the church because each family wants control. They are actually saying it is their church. I have met with them many times, trying to explain that it is God's church, and discussed scripture about forgiveness and reconciliation, and it does no good. satan (I refuse to capitalize his name) has a foothold, and only prayer can break it, so I ask you to pray for the people of this church. I know God will have the victory.
Jerusalem Baptist Church was full. There must have been over 400 people in the church. After many Haitian singing groups, our team sang a song, and then Pastor Lewis gave a simple message of salvation using John 3:16 and--praise the Lord!--we have two more in the Kingdom, Hallelujah!!
Tomorrow will be the first work day for the team, and they are all excited to see what the day may bring. Continue to pray for us. God bless.

November 12

We had a very busy day today. We got up early and took the Wisconsin team to the airport. Praise God, we made it with no problems, and they got on their way. I really am going to miss them. After dropping them off, Will and I went to a service station and filled up Gabriel and the Ford, and we bought twelve 5-gallon jugs of Culligan water. I sent Kat and Ginette to buy groceries for the team coming in. I gave them my credit card, some cash and a Haitian chauffeur--they laughed and told me that they were going to have a good time. Then we went and picked up Chris (from Santa Rosa Beach, Florida), who came in at 9 a.m. Will took him on up to the mission house, after stopping to buy ice for the coolers. I went and had the Ford sprayed off--it is terribly dusty here. Then it was time to pick up Pastor Chris and Pleas from Hartford, Alabama, at 10:20. I took them up to the mission house, and by this time Kat and Ginette were already there. They were cleaning the bathrooms and mopping floors, but took the time to set out some sandwich stuff for us.
After lunch we did a few quick projects, then it was time to go back to Port and pick up the remainder of the team--some from Memphis, TN, some more from Hartford, AL, one person from Foley, AL, and two from Pensacola, FL. Everything went smoothly at the airport, but one piece of luggage didn't make it. I figure if just one didn't make it out of all the luggage for about 40 people in the last two weeks, that's pretty good. After we loaded everyone up and got out of the airport, it was already dark. The Lord was good, as always, and gave us a safe trip up the mountain.
Kat and Ginette had dinner ready, and after we unloaded we ate, discussed a few rules of the house, and told everyone that they could just relax and get some sleep. Most of them had gotten up really early.
It really was a wonderful day! God blessed me with an awesome team from Wisconsin, and now He's blessing me with more brothers and sisters who love the Lord--it couldn't get any better than this. Oh, but wait, I got an email from the seniors and others at Wright Baptist Church who held a bargain sale this weekend, and they made $3474. This is the third one they have had this year, making a total of almost $12,000--it just gets better and better when the body of Christ works together!
I want to thank my brother Karl Leiber, who made this trip so much easier for me. I am so blessed to have brothers and sisters who not only love the Lord, but love doing His work.

HBC will hold a "PANTS DANCE"! This idea came from Susan Bailey: "As a mother of boys, I get to do the “pants dance” this time of year. I’m sure you know what I am talking about. The first day that it is too cool to wear shorts to school. You grab a pair of last years jeans only to see that your baby boy is not a baby anymore. The jeans he wore in 6th grade don’t fit or the 4th grade pants just don’t make the cut to 5th grade. So I just keep grabbing pants and we keep trying on until we find some that fit."

This is a way HBC and Scattering Seeds can do something for the boys of all ages at HBC. We need Jeans & Pants in good condition -- all sizes. This will be for all boys. All ages. The plan will be to collect as much as we can and sort thru.

We will have the boys from Wed night “Team Kids” come do the Pants Dance and see what they can find. All boys will be encouraged to dance. If each kid can take home a couple of pairs of jeans that would be awesome! Then we will have the Youth boys do the same upstairs.

Times are tough on everyone, and this is just another way we can help each other. Take all donations and drop offs to the church office.

Girls Nite Out

Thanks to all who helped with the "Girls Nite Out" for the youth girls. As you can see from the photos, the girls that came (about 12) had a great time spending their $300 funny money on clothes, jewelry and shoes.

Thanks to all who donated clothing and jewelry! This was the second year for this shop-a-thon for the youth girls, and we plan to make it an annual event. Please remember to save those donatables you think would appeal to youth for next year - and encourage your friends (and their daughters) to do the same!

Advent Book

The theme for this year's "Advent Book" is "In A Helpless Baby's Eyes, Heaven Takes Us By Surprise." Writers for the daily devotionals are needed, and you will be furnished a Bible verse to write your own personal reflections on that verse limited to 300 words. Deadline for submissions is October 15.

Thanks to Cheri Orr and Alice Mowbray for hosting the August meeting at Cheri's with Joyce Brannon giving the program on prayer and completely trusting the Lord. Below is the pound cake recipe that Cheri used for the refreshments (along with Alice's cheese straws)!

BLUEBERRY CREAM CHEESE POUND CAKE

Ingredients:

1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
1 (3.4 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
1/4 cup white sugar
1/4 cup water
3/4 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, room temperature
1 (16.5 ounce) can blueberries, drained, juice reserved
1 cup confectioners' sugar

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10 inch Bundt pan.
In a large bowl, stir together cake mix, pudding mix and sugar. Make a well in the center and pour in water, oil, eggs and cream cheese. Beat on low speed until blended. Scrape bowl, and beat 4 minutes on medium speed. Stir in the blueberries. Pour batter into prepared pan.
Bake in the preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.
Make Glaze: In a small bowl, combine confectioners' sugar with 2 tablespoons reserved juice from the blueberries. Drizzle over cooled cake.

Benefit Yard Sale for Hackleburg - Aug. 6

Shiloh and Hartford Baptist will have a YARD SALE on Sat., Aug. 6th, at the Movies 2 Go building from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the church in Hackleburg, AL, that was destroyed by tornado in April.

If you need to clean out the storage room or closet or just cull a few items, now is the time.

There are 14 spaces available to be divided between Shiloh and Hartford Baptist. 10 spaces are @ 8 x 8 spaces, 2 are 8 x 4 spaces and two would just be table spaces. So, we can divide them into 5 - 8x8 spaces, 1 - 8x4 space, and 1 table space for each church. Let Michelle Darrow know by Wed. July 27th as to who wants a space.

A huge Thank You to everyone who helped with the Faith & Freedom Fest! God smiled on us by allowing good weather and a fun time!

We appreciate Susan Bailey for organizing this spectacular event and working unselfishly on her own special birthday, July 3. "Well done Thy Good and Faithful Servant!"

To all who volunteered to make a pot of chili, cook hot dogs, assemble, wrap, transport or serve the chili dogs then clean up, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Everyone was so cooperative and pitched in to quickly make the 1025 dogs! Your teamwork made my job easy and I appreciate you giving of your time.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT MINISTRY -- Phillip Reed, who is a minister and high school teacher, has a wonderful heart to reach foreign students while staying right here in our area. God is leading him to find Godly Christian homes to host foreign exchange students. He coordinates this program for our area, and he highly favors families who will provide a gospel-friendly environment for these students.

The host family is only responsible for supplying a bed for the exchange student (they can share a room with a host sibling of the same sex and similar age), providing 3 square meals a day, and ensuring transportation to and from school and extra-curricular activities. Otherwise, the Exchange Student is responsible for all his/her personal bills and come with their own spending money.

Women of Many Hats

Barbara Hughes' program reflected on Mother's Day to discuss the many hats each of us women wear every day -- the mother hat, the cook hat, the coach hat, and the list goes on. In honor of the hat theme, each Scattering Seeds member wore their favorite hat.

It was a fun evening of laughing and enjoying a different approach -- and seeing who had the actual hats of their mothers! Thanks to Glenda Lake and Sharrel Forehand for the delicious refreshments!

'Jesus is the Gift is a movement that focuses on and honors Jesus as the ultimate gift. We encourage Christians to celebrate Him by tying a ribbon around a cross as a visual reminder of His sacrifice. We also challenge believers to engage in gift giving as a loving act of ministry and reflection of Jesus rather than a chore or obligation.

Our goal is not to discourage the many wonderful aspects of the Christmas season but to redeem giving, decorating, and celebrating in a way that brings “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” (Luke 2:14 KJV). '

Handcraft Show is Sunday!

Calling all Scattering Seeds members to help with the Handblessings Handcraft Show this Sunday, Sept. 12. We'll need help at 1:00 p.m. to set up the displays and assist people with filling out their information sheets. Dig in your attic for granny's quilt and auntie's crochet baby coat! New items are also wanted to display -- scrapbooks, knitting, sewing -- if it's handmade, we want to display it! The show is from 2:00-3:30 -- and thanks to Becky for making the cake before she leaves town and to Susan for making the punch!

Also, this is the time to dig through your old photos for pictures of historical Hartford and HBC for our calendar. We will scan the photos that day, so no one will have to turn over their valuable pictures. We'll be pre-selling the calendars and birthday and anniversary listings that day also. Calendars will be $15, and the listings are $1 each (one free with each calendar purchase)!

The message on the top left of this page was from Patricia today. It goes perfectly with what we wanted to do for Lynn Isler, but she isn't doing well, so we're going to have to cancel the party we had planned to have for her.

Back from Africa

Barbara Worthy presented the program at the August 9 meeting at the Fellowship Hall on her May trip to Africa. Although not listed as a "mission trip," Barbara was able to work missions while there -- speaking to some of the residents while there and distributing New Testaments. She also has plans to send supplies to the two schools they visited while there. Thanks, Barbara, for the insight into Africa!

For several days now I have stopped to write this thank you letter. And every time I feel that the words “thank you” are just not enough. But “thank you” is all I can say. There are no words to describe how much I appreciate each person that had a hand in making our Faith & Freedom Fest a success. God has had His Hands in this outreach from the beginning and God will continue to get all the praise. Thank you Scattering Seeds for EVERYTHING!!! And . . . . . .

Help needed to move family . . .

Our church family has an opportunity to help an elderly couple move Saturday, May 1st. The couple is not able physically or financially to do the move themselves. This is one of the couples we served during our D-Now Weekend back in January.

We are in need of volunteers, trucks and trailers (preferably covered). If you can help, please call Chris @ 449-0205. We will meet at the church at 9 a.m. on May 1, and with some good help it shouldn't take too long. It is a small house, and it is an in-town move. Let's not miss this opportunity to help someone in need!

Guided by the Spirit

Thanks to Susan Bailey for the powerful message at Scattering Seeds. Susan brought the true spirit of "Scattering Seeds" to life with her message of listening to God's guidance to minister to others -- especially those we don't know or haven't noticed before. Many times we learn more from others just by listening to them -- and those we think we are ministering to are actually ministering to us. What is really important is not the "things" and "possessions" that clutter our life -- but our relationships, our families, our friends, our health.

Actually Susan got our attention before the meeting started by walking by the house dressed in worn clothing, then coming to the door to ask for a cup of water. It made us think. Would we let her in? Would we help a helpless person in need -- who was a stranger? She then shared her experiences of what she has learned and how God has spoken to her through strangers. Thank you, Lord, for blessing us with Susan!

And now . . . here is the recipe from Cary for the trifle served at the meeting -- and it's healthy!

"HEALTHIFIED" STRAWBERRY-PEACH TRIFLE

1 box (4-serving size) sugar-free vanilla instant pudding and pie filling mix

2 cups fat-free (skim) milk

2 cups frozen fat-free whipped topping, thawed

1/2 cup strawberry or peach preserves (all fruit, no sugar)

1/2 cup orange juice

8 cups cubed (1-inch) angel food cake (10 to 12 oz)

3 cups sliced fresh strawberries

3 medium peaches, peeled & sliced (or 2 cups frozen peaches, thawed - or 1 16-oz. can no-sugar-added canned peaches)

1/4 cup sliced almonds, toasted* (optional)

In large bowl, make pudding mix as directed on box for pudding using 2 cups milk. Refrigerate 15 minutes. Gently stir in whipped topping until blended.

Meanwhile, in small bowl, mix preserves and orange juice until blended.

In 3- to 4-quart trifle bowl or clear glass bowl, arrange half of the cake cubes. Top with half of the strawberries and peaches. Drizzle with half of the preserves mixture. Spoon and spread half of pudding mixture over fruit. Repeat layers, ending with pudding. Sprinkle almonds over top. Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate.

Buddy Guilford has been working diligently to get Hartford Baptist Church and The Prayer Garden Web sites updated -- and his task has been successful! It has been a struggle and a long time coming for Buddy, but he is now confident that we can now make it happen and that the sites can be used as a ministry to our members and our families and friends that have connections to HBC or the Hartford area, but no longer live here. Click on the links above to view the sites.

At one time HBC was getting about 400 hits per week on the church and the garden sites. With regular updates, we can surpass that figure. So check out the sites and let Buddy know what you think. The newsletter is being uploaded to the site on Monday evening, and Janet is doing a great job keeping the calendar current. If you haven't seen the new church calendar on line, check it out and let Janet know when additions are necessary.

He hopes to update some of the pictures and slide shows soon -- especially the kids planting the " children's garden". On the garden site, the home page now has an updated picture for "the plant of the month". On the funding page check out the new pictures of memorial bricks. On the Biblical plant of the month page you will find the Easter Lily and sign. And finally on the resource page, the feature of the month has been updated to show a picture of the cross bed.

Burned Biscuits

When I was a kid, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work. On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned biscuits in front of my dad.

I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all my dad did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my mom and ask me how my day was at school.

I don't remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that biscuit and eat every bite! When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for burning the biscuits. And I'll never forget what he said: "Honey, I love burned biscuits."

Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night, and I asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said,"Your Momma put in a hard day at work today and she's real tired. And besides - a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!"

Life is full of imperfect things.....and imperfect people. I'm not the best at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and anniversaries just like everyone else. But what I've learned over the years is that learning to accept each others faults - and choosing to celebrate each other's differences - is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.

And that's my prayer for you today. That you will learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of God. Because in the end, He's the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where a burnt biscuit isn't a deal-breaker!

Upward Concessions Report

Thank everyone that helped with the Concessions for Upward Basketball this year. After the start up money and supplies are paid for, Scattering Seeds will give $1239.71 to the Upward program. That is great, and it could not have been done without everyone's help -- and thanks especially to Lisa Ketchum who chaired the project.

Lisa says, "Thank you all again. It blesses my heart to see these little kids come in each year and be so excited about playing Upwards. This is truly a ministry that is touching many lives. God Bless and Have a Great Day!"

Merry Christmas Party

Thank you to Nina Brannon for sharing your home with us again this year for our Scattering Seeds Christmas party, and to Lisa Ketchum for co-hostessing. This has become a tradition for our group to meet at Christmas, and the food was delicious!

As always when the group gets together, a good time was had by all! From sharing prayer requests to helping families in need, especially during the Christmas season, Scattering Seeds is more than a Mission Group -- we're friends who care for and support each other.

MaryAnn shared the Christmas story from Luke with us, and Susan commented on her year as president and thanked everyone for stepping up and helping with projects. Peggy will take over as new president in 2010.

The meeting concluded with "Dirty Santa" ornament swap -- which is always fun, and sometimes mean! Some had theirs stolen several times -- some managed to get just the one they wanted.

Barbara kept hoping for one with a date on it -- because she said she'd been looking for a date for some 50-something years!

Patricia said she was staying out of the rules this year because everyone picked on her -- but she said we'd have more fun with her rules! I told her we wouldn't do it if we didn't love her!

And Nina commented on the store clerk's comments when she was purchasing the pineapple juice for the punch. The girl asked her if she was making "hunch punch?" -- and Nina replied she had Jesus and didn't need that kind of punch!

It's wonderful that we have such a close group where we can do the good that the Lord wants us to and help others -- and we can have fun doing it! We wish you all Christmas blessings!

Our NOVEMBER MEETING will be at 6:30 on the 9th at the Church with Susan Bailey and Vicki Smith as hostesses. Since Upward Basketball Registration will be going on in the Fellowship Hall, we will meet upstairs in the Education Building.

Kristin Atwell, Hartford police investigator, will talk about the faith-based Wiregrass reading initiative tutor program and upcoming literacy certification training through the Alabama Baptist Association.

Thanks to Vicki Outlaw for heading up our October project for our college students. If you haven't done something for your selected student, it's still not too late.

Our November project is helping the youth with Thanksgiving baskets for our shut-ins. Theresa Sorrells is already at work on this project and will update us at the meeting.

Fall Festival

Hartford area churches will again host a Fall Festival at the Square this Saturday, October 31st. There will be free hotdogs and drinks. Each participating church will have a booth for games and fun. Everyone is invited to come. It begins at 5:00 p.m. and concludes at 7:30 p.m.

Please bring donations of individually wrapped candy by the church office to be handed out at HBC's booth.

Handblessings Handcraft Show

Scattering Seeds Handblessings Handcraft Show was a great success -- and thanks so much to everyone who helped to set up and brought your handcrafted items to share! Becky made a "wonderful" strawberry cake, Susan made the punch (always wonderful), and Patricia provided some of her beautiful roses for decoration! You can see from the photos that we had many beautiful handcrafted things shared by people in our church . . . and others in our community.

We had many antique linens, clothing, crochet, quilts and embroidery -- and we had items from 20-30 years ago like crewel embroidery, dolls, needlepoint and crochet -- and we had newer things including pottery, cross-stitch, ceramics, children's dresses, more quilts and just too many to name them all. What talent we had from our ancestors -- and what talent we have today! And they weren't all done by "women"! Joe Hinson showed his paintings, and the new pastor at Sardis United Methodist, Wesley Syfrett, showed his handmade fishing lures.

Laughter could be heard all around as everyone took some steps back in time and reminisced about times past. We would like to continue this show yearly to continue this show of Hartford's wonderful talent. Be thinking what you can display next time!

Ladies' . . . Tell all the men you know that the Brotherhood program this Sunday, September 6, will be "Letters from Dad." Micah Turner and Joe Craig will lead a discussion about this program designed especially for men. They don't want to miss this! And tell them to invite a friend!

“Letters from Dad” is a national men’s ministry helping fathers to learn to leave a legacy by saying the things they’ve always wanted to say but just didn’t know how. “I love you,” “You’re the treasure of my life,” and “I’ll always be there for you,” are things every child wants and needs to hear from their dad. “Letters from Dad” has helped to restore family communication, produced healed marriages and reconciled parent child relationships, all through the lost art of letter writing.

Hartford Baptist Church will be hosting a Tailgate Party to introduce “Letters from Dad” to our community on Monday, September 14th, at 6:00 p.m. Admission is FREE.

The Scattering Seeds mentor lunch outing was Saturday, August 29th, at Highland Oaks. We had a bout 30 attend for a great time, great Christian fellowship and some really good food!

Thanks to Susan, Patricia and Jan for organizing the luncheon for us and furnishing the door prizes. Thanks to Veleria and Jan for driving the vans! The van ride to and from was also a lot of fun and gave everyone a good opportunity to talk and get to know each other!

Mission Projects

At our June 13 meeting, Gloria Conrad presented a very inspiring program on her mission trip to Honduras. She spoke of the need for shoes for the people there, and that croc-type flip-flops could be purchased for $2 a pair. It was suggested by members that Scattering Seeds buy 100 pairs of shoes by sending a check from our treasury. It was also suggested that individual members might want to contribute. You could do this by getting the money to Sharrel in the next week and marking it designated for Shoes for Honduras. You can find out more by checking the Tribal Connection web site.

The August mission project -- Teacher Appreciation -- will be Fri., Aug. 7. If you weren't at the meeting to sign up, contact Carol Spivey or Kathy Howell. Scattering Seeds members will furnish finger foods for teachers and support staff at the elementary and high schools (they have about 35 at each school).

HBC's Faith & Freedom Fest

God blessed Hartford for the third annual Faith and Freedom Fest on July 5 at the Recreation Park! First with a refreshing rain that was sorely needed (even if it did blow some tents and decorations down) -- then with a cooling off and a wonderful community spirit of fellowship.

The music was fun and inspiring from several individuals and church groups. Once again the chili dogs, watermelon and Hawaiian ices were a big hit. Kids enjoyed face painting, games and playing on the playground. And the grand finale fireworks were awesome!

Thanks to organizer Susan Bailey -- and especially to every HBC and Scattering Seeds member that did your part to make this such a great event for our community!

MAY PROJECT UPDATE - Thanks to Joyce Brannon for the hospital waiting room baskets and also to all those who helped with preparing and delivering 20 May Day baskets to our shut-ins.

Our June project is to help with VBS – “Boomerang Express” – June 8th–12th. Please call Connie Walker if you can help in any way. Also, if you would like to help decorate, please contact Susan Bailey or Lisa Taylor.

Two of our members, Mary Langford and Vickie Outlaw, are leading a Bible study of the book of Esther on Tuesday night in Mary's home. This is for teenage girls and it has been well attended. Let us remember them in prayer.

Our May project was providing May Day baskets to 20 shut-ins. Several gathered at the church on April 30 to stuff and decorate the baskets -- delivering on Fri., May 1. Thanks to Lynn for making the cards to go in the baskets, and thanks to everyone who helped! They were greatly appreciated.

A reminder to keep in touch with your mentee as often as you can. This is an ongoing relationship -- even if it is only a phone call -- send a card -- meet for coffee or lunch. Let them know you are there for your mentee. We may make plans to all go out for lunch on a Saturday -- let us know what you think.

The order forms are ready to place your order for the 2009 Faith & Freedom Fest t-shirts (for the 4th of July)! Payment is due when you place your order, and you can return to Susan Brannon, Sharrel Forehand, Linda Howell or the Church office no later than Sun., May 31. APRIL MEETING will be at 6:30 on the 13th at Jonnie Ruth Crutchfield’s home with Patricia Guilford as co-hostess. The program will be presented by Vicki Baxter on her experiences while deployed to Iraq. Vicki is a Department of the Army civilian at Fort Rucker and is a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. She was the Commander of the 787th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, Dothan, AL, and was deployed from 7 April 2007 to 1 April 2008. Vicki commanded 1,300 Soldiers in western Iraq who provided support to the Marines and Special Forces. Currently in the Army Reserves, she is Commander of the Army Sustainment Command - Army Reserve Element responsible for providing support to Army units getting ready to deploy and to those deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. We invite everyone to come and hear what she has to share with us.

The goal for our Annie Armstrong Easter Offering this year was $6500. The offering was taken on April 5th and thus far we have received $9,992.37 -- PRAISE THE LORD!!

Our APRIL PROJECT is our annual Easter Egg Hunt. Thank you to Glenda Galloway and everyone who has signed up to help make this a success. If you haven’t signed up yet, there’s still time – just give Glenda a call. And don’t forget to bring your filled eggs by the Church office.

The date for our MAY PROJECT -- the needlework show -- will have to be changed because many of our ladies will be leaving on May 3rd for the Senior Adult Evangelism Conference. This will be discussed at the meeting.

Our June project is to help with VBS. If you can help in any way, see Connie Walker for an assignment. Even those who work during the day can find a place to help.

A new Ladies Bible Study starts next Tuesday. It is a Beth Moore Study of Psalms and will have 7 sessions.

Scattering Seeds will sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt at Hartford Baptist on Sat., April 11, at 1:00 p.m. In addition to hunting eggs, children will have refreshments, a puppet show and the Easter Story! All children up to 10 years old are welcome to come and celebrate Easter with us!

More eggs (filled with candy) are needed. Please drop off at the church office before Saturday!

The Cake

Sometimes we wonder, "What did I do to deserve this?" or "Why did God have to do this to me?" Here is a wonderful explanation!

A daughter is telling her Mother how everything is going wrong -- she's failing algebra, her boyfriend broke up with her, and her best friend is moving away.

Meanwhile, her Mother is baking a cake and asks her daughter if she would like a snack The daughter says, "Absolutely Mom, I love your cake.."

"Here, have some cooking oil," her Mother offers.
"Yuck" says her daughter.
"How about a couple raw eggs?"
"Gross, Mom!"
"Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?"
"Mom, those are all yucky!"

To which the mother replies: "Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves. But when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake!"

God works the same way. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through such bad and difficult times. But God knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always work for good! We just have to trust Him and, eventually, they will all make something wonderful!

Annie Armstrong Easter Offering

North American MissionsEmphasis and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering -- Celebrate the Week of Prayer by encouraging church members to pray for North American Missions and our 5,600 missionaries serving in the United States, Canada, and their territories -- and to give to the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering.

Each year, we honor the life and work of Annie Walker Armstrong (1850-1938) when we give to the annual offering for North American missions named after her. As a tireless servant of God and a contagious advocate and supporter of mission efforts throughout the world, Annie Armstrong led women to unite in mission endeavors that ultimately led to the formation of Woman's Missionary Union, for which she served as the first corresponding secretary.

Annie believed in Christ with all her heart, but it was her hands that expressed that belief in tangible ways. She spent a great amount of time typing and handwriting letters in support of missions. Many of these letters were quite lengthy and all were filled with conviction that more could and should be done in our mission efforts. In 1893 alone, she wrote almost 18,000 letters! Annie also never hesitated to use her hands to reach out to hug a child or distribute food and clothing and the Word of God to those in need. Her hands held her own Bible as she studied to know how best to share Gods love with others. And, most important, Annie was a woman of prayer, folding her hands in prayer to intercede for the missionaries and for those they were helping discover Christ.

Annie rallied churches to give more, pray more, and do more for reaching people for Christ. As we continue to unite to make her vision a reality in North America today, we can be confident that her legacy will also be ours.

FEBRUARY PROJECTS were Upward Basketball Concessions and hot dog lunches for our shut-ins. Thanks to Barbara Worthy and Lisa Ketchum for heading up the concessions. There were 20-25 Scattering Seeds members who worked with concessions during the month. Also thanks to Janet Bottoms, Debra Yates and all those who prepared and delivered hot dogs to 15 of our shut-ins.

Our APRIL PROJECT will be our annual Easter Egg Hunt. Glenda Galloway is heading this project and will have a sign-up sheet at our meeting. Please be prepared to sign up to help.

The goal for our Annie Armstrong Easter Offering this year is $6500. On Wednesday night, March 18th, during prayer meeting, there will be a short video about the offering and then on Sunday night, March 22nd, we will have our mission study in the fellowship hall.

COOKBOOK UPDATE: We only have about 30 cookbooks left. If you know of anyone who still hasn’t purchased their copy, please let them know. When these are gone, there won’t be anymore.

Scattering Seeds provided a meal for Pam Cook's family a couple of weeks ago. She came home Monday, so if anyone would like to prepare a meal for them it would be very much appreciated. Please also keep this family in your prayers.

Mentoring Program Coffee

Scattering Seeds Mentor Coffee was well attended on Sun., March 1, at 2:00. Susan Bailey started the group off with an ice-breaker where we all learned something "interesting" about each person there. Some of the most interesting were members who had . . . eaten an Iguana in South America . . . bungee jumped in Las Vegas . . . ridden an Olympic bobsled . . . but probably the one that got the most laughs was the one who glued her fingers together with superglue . . . while naked! We'll just leave that one to your imagination . . . and to guess who they all were!

We also heard what the mentoring program is to be from Peggy Miller, and then how the program will work from Patricia Guilford. We all filled out information forms that will be used to pair up mentors and mentees. Jan Vinyard summed it all up with some words about casting off our "outward" appearances and being our "true" selves.

The refreshments were wonderful and a huge thanks to the committee for their hard work in studying books and information to formulate our mentoring program. What's next? They will be working to match people according to the information sheets . . . then we'll start building relationships! This will be a true blessing for the women of our church. Thanks to all who attended.

Even though I clutch my blanket and growl when the alarm rings each morning, thank you, Lord, that I can hear. There are many who are deaf.

Even though I keep my eyes tightly closed against the morning light as long as possible, thank you Lord, that I can see. There are many who are blind.

Even though I huddle in my bed and put off the effort of rising, thank you, Lord that I have the strength to rise. There are many who are bedridden.

Even though the first hour of my day is hectic, when socks are lost, toast is burned, and tempers are short, thank you, Lord, for my family. There are many who are lonely.

Even though our breakfast table never looks like the pictures in magazines and the menu is at times unbalanced, thank you, Lord for the food we have. There're many who have no job.

Even though I grumble and bemoan my fate from day to day and wish my circumstances were not so modest, thank you, Lord, for the gift of life.
